How to stay hydrated during Ramadan
April 18, 2022Thirst has no doubt become a usual companion throughout the month of Ramadan. But there are a few tips and tricks that can help you avoid dehydration.
1. Drink water!
Obvious, right? To avoid feeling thirsty during your fasting, you need prepare for it by drinking enough water during the night. Instead of drinking a lot at once, try to drink a cup or two of water every hour.
Keep reminding yourself! An easy way not to forget to drink your water is to associate it with a daily aspect. We recommend drinking your water every time the commercials come on during your favourite Ramadan TV Show.
Water plays a significant role in weight loss and maintenance, because it helps to get rid of toxins, to make you feel hydrated and energetic the next day.
Finally, avoid the sugary drinks! Sahlab and Amar El Din may be Ramadan essentials, but they also contribute to your dehydration the next day due to the high sugar content.
2. Dress accordingly
This may sound strange, but fashion matters. Some clothing items can cause your body to lock in unnecessary heat. If you work indoors, pick a light-colored shirt; if most of your day is spent outside, a darker color will help protect you from the effects of the sun. In this festive season, try to avoid black clothing. Black tends to attract the heat and lock it close to your body. Instead wear light-coloured, loose clothing made of natural fibers. This will allow your body to breathe and for you to feel comfortable all day.
3. Plan the menu
Some foods may be exactly what you’re craving after a long day of fasting, but they can contribute to severe dehydration the next day. Avoid spicy and salty dishes as they increase thirst and cause water retention. As much as you don’t want to hear this, most delicious Ramadan sweets are also a a big no-no in-order to avoid dehydration. Consume sweets, salty and spicy foods in moderation and increase the intake of vegetables and fruits as they are a good source of extra water.
