OWN your Suhoor
April 18, 2022Ramadan is about fasting and just as importantly, it’s about Suhoor!
Fasting during Ramadan requires self-discipline and sacrifice, but you don’t have to sacrifice your health! Here’s how to OWN your Suhoor.
Suhoor is an essential part of Ramadan and is an important way to provide the body with the nutrition and fluids it requires for the fasting period of the next day.
However, a common concern that leads people to skip Suhoor is weight gain.
This is unhealthy as skipping Suhoor may lead to dehydration, sluggishness and lack of concentration. Consuming a well-balanced meal for Suhoor will not only help you feel full and hydrated the next day, but will also help you avoid weight gain.
A healthy Suhoor menu should consist of the following food groups:
1. Protein: A good protein intake is useful in helping you feel full longer. Consume lean protein such as chicken or fish and low-fat dairy products.
2. Complex Carbs: As opposed to simple carbs (such as white rice or white bread) complex carbs take a longer time to digest. `This means that they will provide the body with energy for a longer period of time and keep you full longer. Complex carbs can be found in whole wheat bread or oats.
3. Fiber: Vegetables and fruits contain lots of fiber. They will help maintain satiety and hydration for longer periods of time. They also add digestion and absorption of nutrients. Choose whole vegetables and fruits as opposed to processed or juiced ones to obtain the full fiber and nutrient content.
Here are a few Suhoor ideas that are easy to prepare, leaving you feeling full and guilt-free:
